The Toronto Blue Jays were 2013's most disappointing team. Not just in Major League Baseball. In the known universe. According to Las Vegas (or maybe it's Reno) the Jays will be lousy again in 2014. But something seems to be missing from that equation.

By nature, I'm skeptical. I'm also somewhat cynical. So, yeah: I'm just, you know, generally a great deal of fun. Getting back to the skeptical part, though ... It started within about an hour of purchasing my first Baseball Abstract, some decades ago. I think my skepticism has been good for my...

Have you ever seen a sidearm knuckleball? I don't think I had, until Thursday night when I saw this .gif (via Blue Jay Hunter Tumblr): Of course that's R.A. Dickey pitching to Mike Trout. I guess Dickey figured nothing else was working, so whatever. It's just too bad the pitch wasn't close....

Wednesday afternoon, Robert Allen Dickey spun a nifty two-hit shutout. It's been a disappointing season for Dickey (and fans of his baseball team), but his 88 Game Score is the ninth-best this season for a pitcher facing an American League team. Of course, last season Dickey threw two one-hitters. But this latest gem is a good sign, right? Yes, and...

We should never be surprised by regression to the mean. It's fair, though, to be surprised by particularly dramatic regression to the mean. And the Toronto Blue Jays are regressing hard. Usually, that does seem like a good thing. Usually when we're talking about regression, we're talking about a player or a team coming down to the mean. For instance,...

Remember when Ricky Romero was the Blue Jays' best starting pitcher? It wasn't actually that long ago: two years ago, Ricky Romero was an All-Star! Since Opening Day of 2012, Romero's 9-16 with a 5.92 in the majors ... and a lot worse in the minors, where he's been asked to completely revamp his pitching mechanics. Well, no more. From...

So I had three ideas for baseball articles, but all three are about the Orioles and this isn't an Orioles blog or something, so instead I'm going to write one baseball article about three Baltimore Orioles. One short article about three regular-sized Baltimore Orioles. 1. Kevin Gausman pitched. It was his first start in the majors. He lost, and now has...

So I'm just sitting around in my pajamas Wednesday afternoon, fooling around on the Internets as usual, when this becomes a part of my life: Gonzales is now, essentially, starting this game. I blame the #Jays for this. Ricky was not ready, should hot have come up. #Mishandled. — Dirk Hayhurst (@TheGarfoose) May 8, 2013 What elicited this Twitterrific screed?...

Today there's great news from St. Petersburg: Blue Jays right-hander J.A. Happ, knocked from the game by a line drive less than 24 hours ago, has been discharged from hospital and is in good spirits. Happ's incident, coming on the heels of serious injuries suffered on the mound by Juan Nicasio in 2011 and Brandon McCarthy in 2012, has of...
