Gavin Floyd was removed from the Blue Jays’ win on Saturday with shoulder tightness

The Toronto Blue Jays have made it official, placing Gavin Floyd on the disabled list with a shoulder injury suffered on Saturday against the Chicago White Sox. Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi was first with the news this morning.

After throwing a pitch, Floyd took a moment behind the White Sox mound before lightly tossing the ball back to catcher Josh Thole and calling for the Blue Jays’ training staff.

Following a competition with Aaron Sanchez for the fifth and final rotation spot in spring training, the 33-year-old Floyd has settled into a full-time bullpen role for the Blue Jays, acting several times as the set up man earlier in the season. Through 31.0 innings in 28 appearances, Floyd holds a 2016 ERA of 4.06 with a 1.000 WHIP and 8.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

Floyd does have a long injury history that has derailed him from being the valuable starter he once was with the White Sox from his mid-to-late 20s, including Tommy John surgery and two fractures in his pitching elbow. Further tests will reveal the severity of Floyd’s injury and provide a clearer timeline for his return.

Taking his place in Toronto’s bullpen will be right-handed reliever Bo Schultz, who pitched 43.0 innings in 31 appearances with the Blue Jays last season, posting a 3.56 ERA.

Schultz has been working his way back from an offseason hip procedure, and the 30-year-old most recently pitched with the Buffalo Bisons at the end of his rehab stint. Schultz got an extended stay in Buffalo, making 14 appearances with a 4.24 ERA.

Currently rehabbing in Buffalo is left-hander Brett Cecil, who could soon be ready to reclaim his spot in Toronto’s bullpen.
