Aaron Loup has now thrown 8 innings in 8 appearances in Buffalo. He hasn't been scored on and has surrendered 5 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 10.  You can add him to the list of pitching reinforcements coming soon (Cecil, Hutchison and Morales).

Tellez is now at .266/.376/.460 in the Eastern League at age 21.  He's picked it up after a slow start, and may or may not be ready for a big league job at the beginning of 2017.

That has to be one of the best MLU titles yet... And now I'm hungry.

Biggio and Bichette off to screaming hot starts. That's refreshing.

Might indicate that they should be at a higher level already, even though both are at age appropriate levels, which would be a very good sign.

JB Woodman has a 48% K rate after putting up a 37% K rate in the cape cod league last year. This pick was always puzzling to me and it looks really bad early on.

The Biggio and Bichette picks are definitely encouraging so far.

Jiminez on the DL again. Anyone know the nature of the injury this time.

Biggio is 3 years older (21 yrs) than Bichette (18).

Biggio (A-) is 2 levels higher than Bichette (Rk), and off to an even better start.

I am fascinated by the start Jake Fishman made for the GCL Jays today. Fishman is a LHP who was a 30th round pick in this years draft.

Fishman induced 11 ground balls, one fly ball, one line drive, a bunt and he walked two. On the face of it that looks like a decent line, other than the bunt he had 11 ground balls to 2 balls in the air. But nine of the ground balls went for hits. At one stage Fishman had four straight balls hit to the shortstop (Kevin Vicuna). Three were singles and one was a double play.

Of the eleven ground balls, three were to centre field, two to right, one to left and five to short.

I have no idea how hard the balls were hit but the play by play looks unique.

Gerry, any thoughts on Connor Panas? He has caught fire over the last few weeks.....
Gerry - Thursday, June 30 2016 @ 02:33 PM EDT (#325544) #
Angel Perdomo has been added to the futures game roster. He joins Francisco Rios.

Panas can hit but lacks a real position. I am sure he can climb higher in the organization but you have to hit a ton to make it as a first baseman or DH. He has been playing some outfield but I am not sure if he will last out there.

Tellez is interesting - he's putting up encouraging numbers in AA @ 21 but whenever prospect gurus have been asked about Tellez in chats etc. - they are not fans - the response is that his swing will not play in the big leagues - will be fascinating to see how it plays out - I wouldn't be upset if the jays moved him.

Bichette is off to a nice start but his brother Dante started off like a house on fire as a yankees prospect in 2011, then becoming pedestrian pretty quickly.

Here's Jeff Moore's prospect report on Tellez.  The key points to me are above-average bat speed and control despite a somewhat long swing.  This report fits with his very fine W/K data.  We'll see how the rest of the season goes.
jerjapan - Thursday, June 30 2016 @ 03:31 PM EDT (#325548) #
85bluejay, have you got sources on that?  The only coverage I've seen on Tellez has been positive ... Sickels had this to say before the start of the season:

2) Rowdy Tellez, 1B, Grade B-/B: Age 20, hit combined .289/.347/.454 between Low-A and High-A, 38 walks, 84 strikeouts in 401 at-bats. Big raw power with good pure hitting skills, defense limited but good reason to be increasingly confident about his bat. Probably won’t rank this highly on other Blue Jays prospect lists

Chad Jenkins has been released by Buffalo. He had really fallen down the depth chart recently and it looked like he was on the phantom DL a week or so ago.

a very encouraging thing about tellez is how he's improved as the season has gone on every year so far. his final line numbers (which are very good) might actually underrate the progress he's made each year.
jerjapan - Thursday, June 30 2016 @ 04:00 PM EDT (#325554) #
Chad Jenkins, we barely knew you, but we'll still always have Detroit!
85bluejay - Thursday, June 30 2016 @ 04:19 PM EDT (#325556) #
I've read a number of dissenting views on Tellez since he was drafted mainly to do with his swing, the latest being the fangraphs prospect guy- www.fangraphs.com/blogs/eric-longenhagen-prospects-chat-6272016/ - John Sickels is the only positive review I can remember reading but I think he's a lightweight because he seems to find it difficult to be negative about any prospect. Having said all that, Tellez is producing nicely at AA.

I remember how disappointed I was on draft day when the Low ceiling but "safe" troika of David Cooper (2008), Chad Jenkins (2009) and Deck McGuire (2010) were announced.

Re: Woodman, I mentioned on the "draft" thread that the Giants had taken an OF just 2 picks after Woodman who looked to me like a significantly better prospect, Bryan Reynolds. Reynolds hasn't played yet, but Woodman is certainly struggling so far in Vancouver. Of course, it's only 29 AB's.
Speaking of the Giants, I see that they are not going to use a DH in today's game in Oakland. They are letting Bumgarner hit for himself. First time it's happened in 40 years (Ken Brett, who had a career OPS of .698, hit .300+ for a season 3 times, and twice drove in 15+ runs).

About the Bison's roster, it seems what Gerry typed a couple of weeks (?) earlier was right -- veterans plays in Triple-A so they can play in the majors, again.

Wade LeBlanc won the International League player of the month and was traded to Seattle. Called up days later, he is going to start for the second time for the Mariners at home on Canada's Day.

Matt Dominguez, once a top prospect for defense in the Marlins organization, was kept on Jays' 40-men roster. He hit not one but two grand slams recently.

Melky Mesa, once a good prospect for the Yankees, delivered the game winning RBI in the game mentioned above in the write-up.

Thanks Gerry for this write-up and a previous insight.
