Brett Cecil returns from the DL, Ryan Tepera optioned, Chad Jenkins released

Left handed reliever Brett Cecil has been activated from the 15-day disabled list and added to the Blue Jays’ roster prior to their Thursday night game against the Cleveland Indians. Ryan Tepera, 2016's Mike McCoy, has been optioned to triple-A Buffalo for the fifth time--and we're only halfway through the season.

Cecil returns to the fold after being disabled for a month-and-a-half for a lat strain. After being one of the best relievers in baseball in 2015, Cecil came out of the gate this season struggling through 16 outings, recording a 5.23 ERA. The Blue Jays desperately need a dependable left-handed reliever out of the bullpen; hopefully Cecil can fill in that role for now as the team waits for Franklin Morales and Aaron Loup to return to form.

The Blue Jays also announced that they have released former first-round pick Chad Jenkins. Jenkins was the 20th pick of the 2009 draft and spent portions of four seasons in the major leagues, all with the Blue Jays. With the Bisons this season he has recorded a 5.16 ERA and a 1.955 WHIP in 20 games, 2 as a starter.

He did not have a particularly memorable major league career but two of the highlights that I remember from his time with Toronto included a six-inning shutout relief appearance on August 10, 2015 to hold a 5-5 tie against Detroit until Jose Bautista walked it off in the 19th inning. (Fun note: Ezequiel Carrera played for the Tigers that game.) It also included this play when Jenkins got his glove knocked right off and still managed to record the putout.
