Blue Jays place Ryan Goins on 15-day disabled list

Toronto lost a valuable defender who was forced to take the mound.

In their 2-1 extra innings loss to the Indians on Friday night, the Blue Jays were forced to call upon Ryan Goins to pitch during the 19 inning contest.

Goins tossed only a few pitches but was placed on the disabled list with forearm tightness Saturday afternoon, the club announced. The tightness is almost certainly the result of Goins being asked to take the mound.

While Goins got the Blue Jays out of a bases loaded situation and didn’t allow a run in the top of the 18th inning, Darwin Barney was also asked to pitch and allowed the go-ahead home run.

Goins, 28, has split time between shortstop and second base this season, batting .176/.216/.308 with three home runs and 12 RBIs over 59 games.

In the corresponding roster move, the Blue Jays recalled Aaron Loup. Loup, 28, has pitched to a 9.00 ERA over four innings with Toronto this season. He logged 42.1 frames last season, posting a 4.46 ERA.

Drew Hutchison, who has tossed 5.2 innings with the Blue Jays this season, was also recalled to give the Blue Jays fresh arms in their bullpen.
