Drew Storen has been designated for assignment by the Blue Jays, likely bringing an end to his very disappointing season in Toronto.

The 28-year-old right-handed reliever has been one of the Blue Jays’ biggest disappointments on the mound since coming over from the Washington Nationals in an offseason deal for outfielder Ben Revere

In 38 appearances this season, Storen had pitched 33.1 innings with a 6.21 ERA. While experiencing a dip in velocity, he posted a career high of 1.6 home runs per nine innings and could not capitalize on recent opportunities to save his roster spot.

On Saturday against the Seattle Mariners, Storen was given some mop-up duty but surrendered a three-run home run that sealed his fate. He had pitched just twice since July 3rd prior to that outing.

As Storen’s DFA process plays out, the Blue Jays now find themselves in a more flexible position when it comes to their bullpen. While Bo Schultz and and Ryan Tepera, who was recalled today in a corresponding move, both have options, a bullpen including Storen left little wiggle room should Aaron Sanchez be moved or an arm be added via trade.

Storen had been pitching sparingly in low-leverage situations, a role that the Blue Jays should be able to fill from within while improving production.

In 29 games with the triple-A Buffalo Bisons this season, Tepera has saved 14 games with an ERA of 2.95.
