The affiliates were 2-4 on Sunday and were 6-14 over the three days of the weekend, not very good. Jose Bautista brought very little to Buffalo, except some spectators. They, Dunedin and Vancouver were 0-3 on the weekend. Bluefield were 3-0 and Bradley Jones led them on Sunday. Lance Jones helped out too. The other winners were Lansing. Even though Vancouver lost all three games, JB Woodman had seven hits

Gwinnett 2 Buffalo 1

Buffalo outhit Gwinnett 7-6 but Gwinnett bunched a walk and two hits to score two runs in the fourth. Scott Copeland is back from Korea and signed with the Jays yesterday. He started and went just three innings plus. He left with two on and Wilmer Font came out of the bullpen to give up the two run single. The Bisons only run came in the eighth when Darrell Ceciliani hit his sixth home run.

Ceciliani and Goins each had two hits. Jose Bautista was 0-4 and grounded into two double plays. He left Buffalo with an.091 batting average and Buffalo with an 0-3 record. Danny Barnes pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Trenton 3 New Hampshire 1

The first three hitters reached off Taylor Cole and the Fisher Cats were down 2-0 before they recorded an out. Cole recovered to go six innings and did give up the third run. John Anderson pitched two innings out of the bullpen, I am not sure if that is a permanent move for him. The Fisher Cats only run was the second home run of the season for Ian Parmley.

Seven New Hampshire hitters had one hit each.

Dunedin 0 Jupiter 5

The Jays only had four hits, all singles, off four Jupiter pitchers.

Sean Reid-Foley took the loss by allowing two runs in 5.2 innings. SRF was not very efficient, he used 97 pitches to get through 5.2 innings. He did only concede three hits, he walked two and had five punchouts. SRF's timing was bad, each of the two times he walked a batter he gave up either one hit or two to let each run score. Maybe it's a sign that SRF is not as sharp out of the stretch? Brad Allen gave up the other three runs.

Kane County 3 Lansing 4

Just like New Hampshire, Lansing were down 2-0 before they came to bat. Jordan Romano was shaky in the first inning with three hits leading to the two runs. He pitched much better after that, just two more hits allowed in his next four innings. Another Canadian, Tom Robson, followed. The Cougars did get five hits off him in three innings but he held them to one run.

Max Pentecost and another Canadian, Connor Panas, hit long solo home runs for Lansing. But the key blow was a two run double by sometimes coach, sometimes hitter, Alex Maldonado. Pentecost and JC Cardenas had two hits each.

Eugene 5 Vancouver 3

Eugene scored three runs in the eighth inning off Zach Jackson to break a 2-2 tie. Jackson was hit around in that inning, three hits, plus he walked two. Patrick Murphy had started and pitched well. Murphy went six innings and had more walks, four, than hits, three. He also had six strikeouts.

Deiferson Barreto homered for the first run. JB Woodman had two more hits, both run producing. He singled in Rodrigo Orozco for the second run and doubled in Cavan Biggio for the third.

Burlington 5 Bluefield 6

The Jays trailed by two headed to the bottom of the eighth. Nick Sinay singled and Lance Jones walked, setting the stage for the other Jones, Bradley, to hit a three run home run. Brad Jones singled and scored the third run. Lance Jones drove in a run with a ground ball. Nick Sinay had two hits and scored two runs.

Jose Espada conceded five runs, three earned, over his 4.1 innings. Kyle Weatherly pitched well to get the win, he went 3.2 shutout innings to keep it close.

Three Stars

Third Star - Alex Maldonado

Second Star - JB Woodman

First Star - Bradley Jones

Boxes

On Saturday only Bluefield and the GCL Jays won. For Bluefield, Osman Gutierrez had a good start and Lance Jones had three hits. In the GCL, DJ Daniels and Ryan Gold each hit their first professional home runs. Kevin Vicuna had three hits. For Vancouver JB Woodman had three hits, Yeltsin Gudino had two. Justin Maese and Jon Harris both conceded a lot of hits for their new teams. In Lansing, Maese gave up ten hits in five innings, but only one run. For Dunedin, Harris gave up nine hits and four walks in five innings. Unlike Maese he allowed five runs. In Buffalo, AJ Jimenez was 3-4 with two doubles, Dalton Pompey 2-3 with one double. Drew Hutchison gave up one run in six innings.

On Friday Bluefield and New Hampshire were winners, another 2-5 day. Hansel Rodriguez went 7.2 innings with three runs allowed for Bluefield. The hitters knocked out 12 hits. Shane Dawson got the in for New Hampshire although with six hits and five walks allowed in five innings, he was somewhat lucky. Casey Lawrence pitched well for Buffalo, Pat Venditte was blown up and took the loss. In Dunedin, Anthony Alford was 2-3 with a home run while Francisco Rios was hit around for seven runs. Bryan Lizardo had three hits for Vancouver, JB Woodman and Joshua Palacios had two each. TJ Zeuch and Geno Encina each pitched three shutout innings.

Gerry, what do you mean Maldonado is a part time player part time coach?

Woodman keeps hitting but that 28.2 K% and .435 BABIP have to be major concerns.  He struck out a lot throughout his minor league career.

Actually that may be a positive sign. He can cut down strikeouts by learning to read pitches better. He has only been playing pro ball for about 5 weeks. It would seem the potential for improvement is there.

Maldonado is a coach with the team. When they are short a player due to injuries or promotions, they activate him. He has only played two games this year. He was a player through 2015 so he is still in relatively decent playing shape.

Interesting ... he just seems so young to be a coach?  Gerry, you have much more hands-on knowledge of the minors than I do - are there many other coaches his age?

Not too many coaches his age. Usually its a player who was more successful, maybe getting to AA or AAA and more often around 30.

But Maldonado might have the right personality to be a coach and if he speaks Spanish that would be reason number two. Maldonado was born in Brooklyn but I assume of Spanish ancestry. Having a coach who speaks both languages is a big need and benefit on a team.
