Blue Jays bring back Bo Schultz, Loup designated for assignment

The Toronto Blue Jays have recalled reliever Bo Schultz from the triple-A Buffalo Bisons and designated Aaron Loup for assignment in a corresponding move. 


Schultz has scattered 10 major league appearances over the season, posting a 3.00 ERA over 12 innings with the Blue Jays. The hard-throwing right-hander was a pleasant surprise in 2015 after being claimed from the Arizona Diamondbacks, making 31 appearances and giving the Jays multiple innings when needed.

The curious point of Schultz’s game comes in his strikeout totals, which haven’t been nearly as high as his velocity would suggest. He is expected to stay with the club through September, and is not entirely out of the picture for a playoff bullpen spot if he catches fire.

Loup has been given ample opportunity to seize the second left-hander’s job in the bullpen, but his major league output has not matched his triple-A numbers. Loup is sporting a 7.45 ERA across 12 outings 9.2 IP) with the Blue Jays this season.

With the Bisons, however, Loup has posted a minuscule 1.08 ERA over 17 outings and turned himself into a strikeout threat. Over 16.2 innings, Loup has struck out 23 triple-A batters.

Despite these inconsistencies, Loup, if he remains within the organization following the DFA process, will still factor in to the Blue Jays playoff roster decisions when he returns in September. Such is the reality of the Jays’ left-handed relied situation, unless an arm is added ahead of the waiver trade deadline at month’s end.
