Jays lose one to the Orioles

Should have caught that Melvin.

Blue Jays 3 Orioles 5

Jason Grilli has been so good, I guess we can allow him one bad outing. That's the first time he's given up more than one run in a outing for the Jays. The walk to Schoop wasn't good, he couldn't seem to get his slider to hit the corner, but then Schoop generally chases pitches off the plate. Then the first pitch to Matt Wieters was a high fastball that left the park in a hurry.

I can't really complain too much about Grilli, he has been so good, can't expect him to be perfect every night.

I was all for letting Joe Biagini pitch the 8th, after he looked good in the 7th, but such is life.

J.A. Happ didn't have a great night, but worked through it. He gave up 2 home runs, both in the 5th inning, a solo homer by Steve Pearce and a 2-run shot by Manny Machado. Happ had base runners every inning except for the 6th, where he had a nice quick 1-2-3 inning. Not a great night, but when you only give up 3 runs, with our offense against Ubaldo Jimenez, it should have been good enough.

We didn't do near enough again Ubaldo:

  • 1 run in the 2nd, Michael Saunders doubled and Kevin Pillar singled him home.
  • 2 runs in the 7th (I thought Buck Showalter left Jimenez in too long) off a 2-run homer by Saunders.
We had a chance to get off to a good start. In the first inning Jose Bautista started things off with a walk and, an out later, Edwin Encarnacion walked (it looked like we were going to get a small strikezone but that changed after the 1st inning), but Russell Martin hit into a double play.

We only managed 5 hits (and 2 of those were in the 7th inning) and 2 walks in 6.2 inning against Jimenez.

And then we couldn't score against Brad Brach and Zach Britton.

We had 7 hits on the night. Saunders and Pillar had 2 each. Bautista (with a walk), Encarnacion (with the other walk),Troy Tulowitzki, Melvin Upton and Devon Travis had 0 fors.

Upton also miss played a fly ball, in the first inning, turning what looked like a fairly easy out, into a double, but it didn't cost us.

Jays of the Day: Saunders (.304 WPA) and Pillar (.117).

Suckage: Grilli (-.318), Travis (-.137), Upton (-.127, plus the bad play in the outfield) and Tulo (-.118).

Update: I don't want to put up a post on this. Ryan Goins is on his way to join the Jays. Darwin Barney is going to be away for 'personal reasons'. And Josh Thole cleared waivers (no surprise there).

We had 1003 comments in the GameThreads. Eric H led the way (didn't he lead the way in our last loss?  Oh well, it would wrong to blame him. Totally wrong.).
