Nice to have Aaron Sanchez back. He was very good. 6 innings, 5 hits, 3 walks, 1 run (uneared), 2 strikeouts. He threw 112 pitches, a few more than I would like, maybe he could have come out after 5 innings, but he had a pretty quick 6th inning. That was Sanchez' 13th win.
The bullpen did the job again.
- Joaquin Benoit allowed just a walk in his inning.
- Brett Cecil came in, to start the 8th, he gave up a fly out to the track, by Chris Davis, then a single by Mark Trumbo.
- Scott Feldman got the last 2 outs of the inning, a strikeout of Steve Pearce and a ground out from Matt Wieters.
- Roberto Osuna gave up a single and a 2-run homer to Jonathan Schoop, but got out of the inning without any more trouble. Osuna took a hard line drive off his glove hand. I was concerned that he was hurt, but he finished it out.
On offense, we did enough. I would have liked a few more runs, but you can't have everything.
Jose Bautista started the game off with a home run. And a couple of outs later, Russell Martin hit a 2-run homer. We thought we were going knock Yovani Gallardo out early. But no, we wouldn't score off him again. He ended up going 6 innings, allowing 5 hits, just the 3 runs, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.
We'd score another run in the 7th, maybe the most fun run of the year. Dioner Navarro was on first when Devon Travis doubled into the left field corner. I thought Dioner might make it to third, but he was waved home and scored. It was good he did, because Bautista struck out to end the inning right after.
And we got 1 more in the 8th, Michael Saunders hit his 23rd homer of the year. I would have bet against him getting more than 10 when the season started.
In all, we had 9 hits (3 of them home runs), 2 walks and 8 strikeouts. There were 2 hits each from Bautista, Josh Donaldson and Navarro (I'm sure I didn't complain about him DHing and will ignore any evidence that I did).
Edwin, Tulo and Pillar had 0 fors.
Jays of the Day: Sanchez (.236 WPA) and Bautista (.123) had the number. I'm giving honorable mention to Martin and Navarro (after that run he deserves at least that).
No Suckage Jays: Edwin had the low number at -.081. He had a rough night.
Also of note, home plate umpire Jerry Layne took a fastball off the mask and had to leave the game. Alan Porter came in to call balls and strikes and had a rather zen view of the strike zone. It was kind of interpretative umpiring. Sort of like modern art, I don't know much about it, but I know what I like. I didn't like that.
That puts the O's 4 games back. The Red Sox are 2 games back.
