Blue Jays hire Ben Cherington as a vice president

The Blue Jays have hired former Red Sox GM Ben Cherington on their staff as a vice president of baseball operations, according to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.

Cherington spent most of his career prior to joining the Blue Jays with the Red Sox, first as a scout and then working his way up to being the director of player development, then general manager. Before that, he worked as a scout for the Indians.

Cherington was at the helm of the 2013 World Series Championship team, but left following Dave Dombrowski’s hire, according to Davidi.

The Sportsnet article also states that Cherington will be working in many areas of the front office, but will have an emphasis on player development. As Cherington was part of the front office that developed Xander Bogaerts and Mookie Betts, this might only stand to improve the Blue Jays’ farm system.
