Gotta Hear It: Vin Scully calls Joe Carter’s 1993 championship HR

On Oct. 2 legendary broadcaster Vin Scully will call his final game, ending his 67-season run as the voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers and, to many, baseball itself.

Over the course of his illustrious career Scully has been afforded the opportunity call 24 World Series (11 on television, 13 on radio).

And while he’s perhaps best known for his famous for his call of Kirk Gibson’s 1988 World Series homer, he also had the honour of calling another World Series walk-off that’s probably a little closer to Toronto Blue Jays fans’ hearts.

MLB.com has recently unearthed a little-known Scully call of Joe Carter’s championship-clinching three-run blast in the bottom of the ninth of the 1993 World Series between the Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies.

While it’s certainly no “Touch ‘em all Joe,” this rendition of the play is distinctly Scully as it features a straight, unbiased account of the action unfolding and then that signature pause in the aftermath of the home run that effectively captures the atmosphere and pandemonium taking place in what was then the SkyDome.

This Sunday will be Scully’s final call at Dodger Stadium.

There’s never been a broadcaster like Vin Scully and there won’t be one ever again.
