Don Cherry: Rangers had no ‘guts at all’ in melee with Blue Jays

Don Cherry and Ron MacLean talk about all the news and notes from around the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Don Cherry doesn’t approve of how the Texas Rangers handled their revenge on Jose Bautista.

Cherry questioned the timing of the Rangers’ decision to throw at Bautista on Sunday afternoon and believes the whole incident displayed a weakness in Texas’s character.

“This is the gutless part about the whole thing,” Cherry said Monday in his appearance on Coach’s Corner. “It’s the last game (of the series). It’s (Bautista’s) last time up to bat. And they bring this guy up from the minors, (Matt) Bush, and he hits him.

“If they had any guts at all, you would have done it the first time in the first at-bat.”

Cherry also took issue with Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor for trying to throw at Bautista’s head during his slide into second base that started the whole melee between the Blue Jays and Rangers.

“Watch Odor,” Cherry said. “When he gets the ball, watch as he throws down. He’s looking at him. Bang. He just misses his head. He throws down at his head like he’s looking right down at him.

However, he did praise Odor for one aspect of the scrum.

“I have to say. This is one of the greatest punches I’ve ever saw,” Cherry said. “But (Jose) Bautista didn’t go down.”
