Martin's backloaded deal gives Toronto payroll flexibility
The Blue Jays opened the vault this week by signing free-agent catcher Russell Martin to a five-year contract worth $82 million, but it's the structure of his deal that's of equal importance to the overall value. Martin's contract is heavily backloaded to provide Toronto with additional flexibility over the next two years.
